Korean Fish Cake: A Snack Worth Eating
Try to recall the many K-drama scenes where the characters of the drama are eating these skewers that were in a heated big container of broth. Do you know what type of Korean street food it is? Dramas tend to show you a lot of Korean snacks and food throughout the show. Many dramas, such as Boys Over Flowers and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo, include this specific street food we were referring to—fishcake, or in Korean, odeng (오뎅).
Odeng is a popular street food served on a skewer in broth. It is a seafood product made of white fish and other ingredients, such as potato starch, sugar, and sometimes even some vegetables. This delicious snack originated in Japan as it's name, odeng, was derived from the Japanese word oden, which also means "fish cake."
Odeng can be customized by adding sauces or just being made in a different broth. For example, you can have it plain, with a sweet sauce on top, or spicy. Different flavors, but all in all still delicious!
Furthermore, odeng is cheap! This popular street food can be as low as 500 won, which is only $0.50 USD! So you don’t only need to satisfy your craving with just one. You can get five or more and still barely put a dent in your pocket!
