5 Famous Drinks You Have to Try! - The Daebak Company

I can guess that you already know of some Korean drinks, all thanks to Korean variety shows, events or even dramas, but I can bet that there are plenty of them that you've never heard about! Regardless, you've got to try them all! Here are 5 of the most famous drinks in Korea!

Bokbunja ju (복분자주)

Also called “Bokbunja ju wine”, this wine is made from fermented black raspberry and water. The alcohol ranges between 15% and 19% by volume and is dependant on the brand. A cup of this drink is sweet and sour as wine is! It’s recommended to drink it as an apéritif or dessert!

Banana Milk (바나나우유)

Alright, you know about this beverage considering its appearance in many dramas or in the hands of most idols. Banana milk is a sugary drink basically made from…. banana and milk! (Shocking) You just need a few ingredients to try it at home! I found this recipe on the internet:

  •  1 ripe banana, sliced or broken into pieces
  • 1/2 cup regular milk1/2 cup water1 Tbsp maple syrup
  • A small drop of pure vanilla extract*1 Tbsp = 15 ml, 1 Cup = 250 ml

Banana milk has also made its appearance on our Instagram!

Soju (소주)

.

There is no way that you have never heard of soju? If you have watched Goblin (도깨비), you can see that this alcohol is often used in many scenes; whether it be sad or happy moments and alone or with friends! Created from rice, soju is really bitter, but really good if you know how to drink it. Korean often mixed Soju with beer. This combination is called Somaek (소맥)

Omija tea (오미자차)

Also known as "Magnolia Berry tea", this specific beverage is a tea with a slightly sour taste. Omija means 5 flavors (오 being the number five in Korean and 미자 meaning "flavor"), which in the case of this tea are: sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness, and pungency. It makes anyone curious as to how so many flavours can be shown through one cup! This tea can be served either hot or cold.

Makgeolli (막걸리)

Last but not least, Makgeolli; made from rice alcohol, this alcoholic beverage is fresh and not as bitter as Soju. This drink is considered as the oldest alcoholic beverage in Korea, is name is a reference among farmers to the traditional popularity of the beverage in Korea. Makgeolli taste is slightly sweet, tangy, bitter, and astringent.
